1702 The Battle of Stevensweert
Here we pay special attention to the battle of 1702 during the Spanish War of Succession.
When in 1648 the Eighty Years' War came to an end, the island of Sint Stevensweert remained in Spanish hands. During the Spanish War of Succession it was besieged in 1702 and taken over by the State troops.
An engraving in the museum gives an overview of the fortifications conquered during the 'Campaign' of 1702. Above right we see the map of Stevensweert.
Below shows a representation of the impressive fireworks that were lighted on the pond of the Binnenhof (The Inner Court of Parliament) in The Hague marking the victories.
