Janvan Steffenswert

Around 1500, by the use of a variety of names, the sculptor Jan van Steffeswert indicated that he originated from Stevensweert.

By signing part of his oeuvre, the artist was doubtlessly aware of his talent. However, around 1500 signing was not very common among artists and certainly quite exceptional for sculptors.

Nevertheless, it took a long time before it turned out that the various spellings found, such as 'Jan Bieldesnider', 'Jan van Weerd' or 'Jan van Steffeswert', all related to the same artist. At his workshop in Maastricht he created numerous magnificent sculptures for churches and monasteries. The Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht boasts several of these magnificent sculptures.
